Review

Of all the radios I have owned, never have I wanted to punch the designer more than the guy that designed this one. This radio has some major annoyances. Field programming is tough unless you remember some quirks about how to get the radio into VFO mode and how annoying the menu is deployed. The audio quality is terrible. The internal speaker makes clear speech sound like rattle and mush. Connecting an external speaker doesn't really help much. The audio stage in the receiver is crap. I would not recommend this transceiver.

Sometimes when you press to talk the radio doesn't transmit. It happens at random. It is important to glance at the front face and make sure the little light turns red to verify that you're actually transmitting when you PTT. This is so useful since you take your eyes off the road while driving each time you PTT because you can't trust the radio will transmit.

You cant change channels from the microphone. The side buttons instead turn up and down the volume! How stupid is that?

The benefits to this transceiver is that it is small, and it is not valuable. If someone breaks into your vehicle and steals your Leixen then you're not out much and you might be better off.

This thing is barely better than having a UV5r in the car with an RF cable off the top to your outside antenna, but the Leixen is possibly a little better.

transceiver refuses to go into VFO mode

Leixen Vv-898 Sp User Manual

Pressing the VFO assigned button on the face or microphone (B) should switch the radio from channel to vfo mode. A bug causes the radio to stay in channel mode.

Things to know about VFO mode:

  • Only the B Band of the display can be put into VFO. Similarly, only the A band can be used in Memory mode.
  • Using software programming the radio can be made to deny VFO mode when mobile to make it more like a Part 90 radio
  • Be sure you have a button set to Band Change (Settings, Radio Menu Settings, Common 2 tab, Key Assignments) so you can switch between VFO bands.

The VV-898S is the updated version of VV-898. The VV898S Dual Band Radio provides you with a reliable, clear and efficient communications service which is enhanced by an ergonomic design. With built-in battery, it is not only convenient to be used in the car, but can be taken with you wherever you go, perfect for on- the-go use.

Built-in Battery: 12000mAh; it takes 6 hours to charge the battery fully and can be used continuously for 4 hours

25W Max Output Power makes it receivable within 20 kilometers.

The housing is detachable and the radio can be used alone, but the user must not take the radio apart, otherwise he/she should bear the relevant responsibility.

Power on the radio and the LCD screen will display the current voltage. If the current voltage is lower than 9V, it needs charging. Otherwise it will reduce the transmission power of the machine.

This backpackable radio is equipped with DC charge hole. When the voltage is lower than 9V, the standard 12.6V charging adapter is available and when the red light turns green, it’s fully charged.

When the machine is continuously used in high power transmission, it is necessary to open the cooling fan to reduce the temperature inside the machine.

If the user does not want to use an external speaker, can be connected to the radio through the headphone jack.
